Job Summary

Installs, maintains, monitors, and supports the operation of Metro′s local area network and wide area network (LAN/WAN), maintains agency standard hardware and software configurations, develops automation tools to manage all software and hardware for network servers and clients, and administers, packages, and deploys desktop computer configurations, including commercial off the shelf and custom applications using desktop management systems.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains, and supports server-based operating systems
  • Installs and maintains all software and hardware for network servers and clients, such as Hewlett-Packard Device Manager, MobileIron, Samsung Knox Configure, and Microsoft Exchange 2010
  • Monitors and evaluates various network operating systems and applications, such as Ivanti DSM (Desktop and Server Management)
  • Supports web-based collaborative platforms such as Microsoft SharePoint
  • Designs agency desktop/laptop computer configurations
  • Analyzes, troubleshoots, and resolves LAN and WAN hardware and software problems
  • Establishes user security for access to LAN/WAN
  • Recommends and implements LAN/WAN policies and standards, and ensures adherence to security procedures
  • Supports and maintains division kiosks and digital signage software and servers
  • Maintains agency software licenses and hardware warranties
  • Trains users on LAN/WAN operations and procedures
  • Assists other technical staff with installation and troubleshooting
  • Maintains contact with vendors or outside organizations in the maintenance, service, and/or purchase of LAN/WAN hardware, software, and services
  • Prepares and maintains technical systems documentation

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)

  • Theories, principles, and practices of management information systems, specified application areas, project planning, and systems architecture
  • Computer hardware equipment and peripherals related to the area of assignment, including server maintenance
  • Computer software products related to the area of assignment, such as software reporting tools, software automation tools, packaging software via desktop management systems, Microsoft Office 365, Desktop and Server Management (DSM), HP Device Manager, MobileIron, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex Teams, Userful Software, Samsung Knox Configure, and Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment
  • Operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Active Directory, Apple, Android and other products related to the area of assignment
  • Network diagram creation
  • Microcomputer and network security and disaster recovery concepts, policies, standards and procedures
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing information systems for a public agency
  • Department operations and procedures
  • Video conferencing, including VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)/SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
  • Self-service kiosks and digital signage
  • Various trade journals, publications, and other technical resources for evaluation of changing technology
  • Computer applications and documentation standards

Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education

  • Bachelor′s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field


Experience

  • Three years of relevant experience in the maintenance of various server systems, including a minimum of two years of experience in network systems (LAN/WAN) in a large enterprise environment with a minimum of 30 servers and 500 workstations; some positions in this class may require specialized experience in area of assignment


Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions

  • Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) A+, Network +, Security + preferred
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA), Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) or certification in network systems related to the area of assignment preferred
  • Overtime, on-call, 24/7 weekend/holiday work required when necessary
  • Travel to offsite location when necessary
