Job Summary
Provides Metro mechanics and other maintenance personnel with maintenance, servicing, and repair training of automotive and heavy-duty non-revenue service vehicles.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develops curriculum and manages the learning process, including student advisement within the instruction area to ensure an effective learning experience
  • Prepares lesson plans, class outlines, and schedules
  • Provides instruction and leadership in the areas of safety, operations, and maintenance of shop tools and equipment
  • Develops, implements, and teaches courses using e-learning technology and other non-traditional delivery methods as required
  • Incorporates the most current teaching techniques, subject area developments, and technology into the learning experience
  • Provides classroom instruction in accordance with approved course outlines
  • Informs students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance requirements, and academic progress
  • Provides for effective evaluation of the learning experience of each student
  • Prepares and grades assignments, projects, and examinations as required
  • Assists in vehicle specification writing and on-site inspections
  • Develops technical training and testing materials
  • Coordinates training needs with operating divisions and department heads
  • Attends onsite and offsite factory update training sessions
  • Establishes safety guidelines on maintenance procedures
  • Interviews and tests applicants
  • Updates and distributes new technical manuals and wiring schematics
  • Provides orientation to personnel on new equipment, systems, and vehicles
  • Analyzes vendor training materials for accuracy and system compatibility
  • Investigates equipment-related accidents
  • Interprets vehicle codes and other laws and regulations
  • Testifies as an expert witness at trials and hearings when required
  • Accounts for subordinates and personal compliance with all of Metro′s safety rules, polices, and procedures

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)
  • Theories, principals, and practices of repair and maintenance of engines, parts, components, and electrical systems of diesel, gasoline, and alternate fuel vehicles
  • Safe and proper use of tools and other equipment
  • Applicable federal, state, and local safety, environmental, and vehicle laws, rules, regulations, codes, and procedures
  • Development of curricula, learning objectives, and lesson plans
  • Applicable business software applications

Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)
  • Planning, organizing, and monitoring training of skilled personnel in maintenance and repair of equipment and related systems
  • Assessing employee training needs and records
  • Reading and understanding diagrams
  • Preparing daily and comprehensive reports
  • Working well with both internal and external customers and co-workers in a group setting
  • Operating vehicle maintenance computers for maintenance, work orders, and asset tracking systems

Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education
  • Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology or equivalent training from a recognized trade school

Experience
  • Two years of relevant full-time experience as an automotive journeyman technician working with vehicle software, systems, tools, and equipment and repairing, maintaining, and diagnosing hybrid vehicle propulsion systems; teaching experience at the Community College level preferred; teaching experience in hydraulic fluid applications, basic hydraulic, and system troubleshooting preferred

Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
  • Valid California Class C Driver License
  • Vocational training or teaching credential preferred
  • Possession of ASE Certified Master Technician and/or ASE Master Mechanic (A1-A8) Certification preferred
  • Extensive out-of-town travel may be required
