Job Summary

Monitors, analyzes, troubleshoots, and resolves database, storage, and backup systems issues to ensure a stable, reliable, and continually available database environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administers and maintains storage systems to maximize efficiency
  • Administers development, staging, testing, and production database environments
  • Determines database memory requirements, processing power, interfaces, and network connections needed
  • Determines appropriate software version to support application(s) and conducts the installation on server(s)
  • Creates and configures SQL (Structured Query Language) servers/ Oracle databases
  • Conducts database performance tuning, query optimization, index tuning, tables restructuring, and storage optimization
  • Applies patches to database and storage systems, and performs database service pack upgrades and release upgrades
  • Administers and maintains backup systems, including database recovery, database security, fault tolerance, and scalability
  • Assists in establishing processes to ensure data backup
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining security and controls access for all databases
  • Participates in disaster recovery testing and supports disaster recovery efforts at remote sites
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems in servers, databases, and recovery programs
  • Analyzes and resolves issues in Metro′s service management system (a.k.a. HEAT customer service model)
  • Creates and updates documentation for applications development and storage requirements
  • Establishes and maintains applicable technical standard operating procedures
  • Assists in ensuring adequate storage capacity planning for the organization
  • Performs data replication
  • Supports the Database Administration (DBA) team
  • Provides guidance to more junior staff members
  • Complies with all Metro safety rules, policies, and procedures
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • UNIX/AIX operating systems

Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field


Experience

  • Five years of relevant experience maintaining a Unix Operating System and administering storage systems and database servers, including three years of experience in the Oracle database administration, architecture, and upgrade process; some positions in this class may require specialized experience in area of assignment


Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Coursework in UNIX OS administration preferred
  • Must be able to support department systems on a 24/7 basis
  • After-hours and weekend work are required as necessary
  • Occasional out-of-state travel required
