Job Summary

Observes and records behaviors of pedestrians and motorists around grade crossings along Metro’s street-running light rail alignments, distribute safety materials, and advises safe practices to the public when unsafe acts are observed.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Observes and reports the behaviors of motorists and pedestrians around grade crossings

  • Records incidents on Daily Incident Report Form and

  • Reports observations to management at regularly scheduled meetings

  • Advises safe practices to pedestrians when unsafe acts are observed

  • Reports any Facilities Maintenance concerns to management

  • Supports safety education outreach efforts along light rail lines

  • Answers Metro-related questions and distributes safety materials

  • Reports emergencies to Rail Operations Control (ROC)

  • Provides assistance for special events and projects, as required

  • Assists supervisory personnel during emergency situations when necessary

  • Maintains, supports, and promotes a safe work environment while complying with all of Metro’s safety rules, policies, and procedures

  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)

  • Basic principles of customer service

  • Basic safety precautions and procedures

  • Metro Rail/Bus safety precautions and procedures

  • Use of two-way radio and codes

Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)

  • Interact effectively with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives.

  • Communicating effectively, professionally, and appropriately with Metro staff, law enforcement and the public

 

Ability to (defined as a present competence to perform an observable behavior or produce an observable result)

  • Represent Metro before the public

  • Understand and follow instructions and apply proper procedures

  • Record observations and maintain records

  • Exercise good judgment in emergency situations

  • Operate a telephone or other telecommunication device and communicate through the medium

Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.  Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.  A typical combination includes:

 

Education

  • None Required

 

Experience

  • Retired from Metro as a bus or rail operator and must be eligible for rehire

 

Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • May be required to change post locations as required by management

  • Must have normal vision and hearing with or without correction
