Job Summary
Supervises and provides training in the maintenance and repair of traction power and other related equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducts classroom and individualized training on all aspects of equipment repair, testing, and maintenance in the area of Traction Power
  • Prepares lesson plans, schedules, and testing performance exams
  • Provides hands-on demonstration in the repair and maintenance of various components of the rail systems
  • Develops detailed technical training and testing materials
  • Coordinates specialized and developmental training needs with division heads and other management
  • Reports to various work locations to provide training and/or technical support to rail maintenance personnel
  • Interviews and tests applicants
  • Operates shop and field tools and equipment for demonstration purposes related to rail systems
  • Reviews, updates, and distributes new manuals and training materials
  • Provides orientation to personnel on new equipment and systems
  • Analyzes vendor training materials for accuracy and system compatibility
  • Prepares reports and correspondence
  • Investigates equipment-related accidents
  • Serves as technical expert for troubleshooting maintenance problems
  • Provides technical expertise to other department personnel
  • Keeps up to date with current technology by attending vendor training sessions
  • Develops and assesses safety programs
  • Establishes safety guidelines on maintenance procedures
  • Accounts for subordinates and personal compliance with all of Metro′s safety rules, polices, and procedures
  • Maintains, supports, and promotes a safe work environment while complying with all of Metro′s safety rules, policies, and procedures

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)
  • Theories, principles, practices, and procedures of repair and maintenance of traction power parts, components, and systems
  • Safe and proper use of tools and other equipment
  • Applicable safety, environmental, and vehicle laws, rules, regulations, and procedures

  • Development of curricula, learning objectives, and lesson plans
  • Applicable business software applications

  • Planning, organizing, conducting, and monitoring training of skilled personnel in maintenance and repair of equipment and related systems

Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

  • Associate's Degree in a related field or equivalent training from a recognized college or trade school

  • Three years of relevant experience performing installation, repair, and maintenance of traction power substations and overhead catenaries or contact rail systems OR three years of relevant full-time experience providing engineering support in rail engineering maintenance OR two years of relevant full-time experience conducting training in the repair and maintenance of traction power systems and equipment

Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
  • Exposure to electrical, mechanical, chemical, and physical hazards
  • Valid California Class C Driver License
  • Must be able to obtain a valid California Class A Commercial Driver License in order to operate an emergency response (Hi-Rail) equipment
  • Must comply with and ensures mandated programs of federal, state, and local agencies, such as EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), AQMD (Air Quality Management District), FRA (Federal Railroad Administration), and CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission), are implemented and employee training, certifications, or yearly permits are up to date
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye, and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Must have normal color vision
  • Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations
