Job Summary
Under moderate supervision, prepares and transforms printable art works for printing in a timely manner using various computers, workstations, and output devices.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Checks incoming files for suitability and prepares art works
  • Imports files into the appropriate application software, edits files to facilitate and assure correct output, and outputs files in proper format to the appropriate output device
  • Burns printables on printing plates
  • Inspects output material to assure conformance to agency specifications and if necessary, contacts designers to clarify requirements and assist in preparing files for use
  • Utilizes integrated print, media and pre-press workflow software
  • Compares completed file to job order to ensure trapping is correct
  • Maintains files of projects and printing plates
  • Performs routine maintenance on assigned equipment
  • Prints and trims large format posters, banners, other projects from Portable Document Format (PDF) files and other customer media; mounts posters on foam boards; applies grommets on banners; and laminates various printed materials
  • Utilizes mounting equipment and specialty cutters
  • Operates other Print Shop equipment as assigned
  • Maintains and monitors supply inventory and inform supervisor when supplies are needed
  • May oversee and coordinate the work of employees on the assigned shift in the absence of the supervisor
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)
  • Functions and operation of computer equipment and large format printers
  • Integrated print, media and pre-press workflow software
  • Software to view, create, manipulate, print and manage files in PDF
  • Desktop publishing, typesetting and graphics editor software
  • Web services
  • Basic math and measurements concepts
  • Safety rules for print shops

Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)
  • Opening, creating, manipulating, debugging and processing files at the application and postscript level
  • Scanning, sizing, color balancing, manipulating and placing images, as necessary
  • Operating and maintaining various printing equipment
  • Operating and maintaining various products finishing equipment
  • Cutting, trimming and operating various cutting equipment
  • Communicating effectively with others
  • Interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Applicable business software applications

Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

  • None Required

Experience
  • Four years of relevant experience performing electronic prepress duties, using imposition and various Adobe software and related equipment

Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
