Job Summary
Under moderate supervision, operates cutting, folding, and strapping machines in support of Print Shop operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sets up, adjusts, and operates programmable cutting machine to cut paper and printed materials to proper specifications
  • Sets up, adjusts, and operates folding machines to fold printed materials to prescribed specifications, including types and number of folds, paper sizes, and thickness
  • Operates automatic collating and strapping machines to sort and bundle paper and printed materials
  • Operates auxiliary bindery equipment
  • Operates power skid mover, forklift, hand-jack, and wheel cart to move large quantities of bundled materials
  • Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment to ensure proper operation
  • Loads, unloads, stocks, and ships printed materials and completes related forms
  • Receives and wraps finished materials from large presses and places bundles into boxes for shipment
  • Reviews work for quality, completeness and accuracy; makes mechanical corrections, as necessary, to ensure customer satisfaction
  • Ensures work area is free from obstructions
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)
  • Set up, and operation of programmable cutting, strapping, and folding machines and other bindery equipment
  • Cutting and folding from specifications
  • The color spectrum
  • Safety rules for print shops

Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)
  • Operating programmable cutting, folding, and strapping machines to run various set ups, including numerous configurations for folding, spiral bound equipment, stitching equipment, etc.
  • Operating a fork-lift, power skid mover, hand-jack, and wheel cart
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Communicating effectively with others
  • Interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives

Ability to (defined as a present competence to perform an observable behavior or produce an observable result)
  • Change a 40-inch blade
  • Troubleshoot, make minor repairs to equipment, and clear jam-ups
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures
  • Adhere to production standards and deadlines
  • Move objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Plan and complete work according to established priorities
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

  • None Required

Experience
  • Two years of relevant experience operating a variety of bindery equipment, including programmable cutting, folding, and strapping machines

Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
