ACCOUNTING OPERATIONS SPECIALIST

Job Summary
Performs specialized clerical accounting work in the areas of payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assigns, monitors, and coordinates work of Accounting Clerks for efficiency and precision
  • Provides training to new and existing Accounting Clerks and evaluates results for efficiency and precision
  • Calculates, verifies, and processes payment of vendors' invoices; researches, responds to and resolves invoice and purchase order discrepancies
  • Resolves past due vendor invoices
  • Receives, tracks, and reports returned check items and distributes accordingly
  • Maintains centralized electronic and hard copy files of documents, and ensures compliance with the department's and the agency's retention policy
  • Retrieves department files and documents from storage using established procedures and methods
  • Reviews, scans, updates, and files various accounts payable documents, logs, and records
  • Posts numerical data into accounting information systems, and verifies the accuracy of the posted data
  • Prepares daily cash deposits for bank transmittal
  • Coordinates with the Treasury Department to process special cash deposits
  • Prepares daily cash deposits and returned check activity for statistical and management reporting purposes
  • Creates garnishment cases and modifications on the garnishment system in compliance to federal and state codes
  • Calculates proper amount paid to recipients based on priority in cases of multiple garnishments
  • Researches various garnishment related matters and prepares garnishment orders for imaging
  • Prepares and submits check requests for re-issues or adjustments of garnishment issues/matters
  • Provides quality customer service to employees, vendors, and outside agencies
  • Distributes special payroll, accounts payable, and other Metro checks via U.S. and interoffice mail, and customer/employee pick-up
  • Orders department stationary supplies
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)
  • Certain accounting methods, principles, and practices
  • Federal and state laws concerning payment and processing of employee wage statements
  • Basic arithmetic and payroll calculations
  • Applicable business software applications

Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)
  • Performing specialized clerical accounting duties
  • Performing arithmetical computations and tabulate figures with speed and accuracy
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Interacting professionally with Metro employees , customers, vendors, and other external representatives
  • Operating office equipment, including calculators and computers, with speed and accuracy
  • Typing 45 net words per minute

Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education
  • Associate′s Degree in Accounting preferred

Experience
  • Six months of relevant experience performing specialized accounting functions in the areas of payroll, accounts payable, or accounts receivable,

Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
  • Excellent attendance record
